fuel delivery probs 200 81

Hi,

My car is an 81 240 dl wagon with 107k. It's been having fuel related

problems for about 1 year. Initially it would not restart intermittently.

I pulled the in tank pump and found the hose and filter nearly destroyed.

I figured that out from finding a relation between the amount of fuel in

the tank and the incidence of occurrence. I also replaced the relay.

Somewhere along in this period another infrequent problem became more

frequent. The motor would start in the morning but would barely idle and

would not rev. I put it in neutral, nursed it to rev normally and then it

would be ok for the rest of the day.

Also fuel related but I think a different symptom was black smoke from

the exhaust after a rough start. This only happened 2 or 3 times. After

this stopped the car was pretty much normal.

The other afternoon after sitting for a couple of hours, it would not

start but it had spark at all the plugs and was getting fuel in the

cylinders. I thought it was flooding. A couple of hours later it tried to

kick but couldn't quite make it. I puzzled about that overnight and the

next day had an idea that if I removed the cold start valve electrical

connection something might happen. Sure enough it started.

I think there's a temp sensor in the cold start loop. Would that or the

valve be the more likely culprit or something else? Where is the temp

sensor? my manual doesn't seem to show it . Is there a microfiche on the

internet?

Thanks,

Hal
