There's always the "rope in the cylinder" trick.

Pull plug 1. Turn the crank to TDC of cylinder #1 (so both valves are closed), and then another 90 degrees beyond that in the clockwise direction.

Stuff some clothesline down the plug hole. Be sure you keep some outside!! (Tie a knot in the outer end tpo remind yourself.)

Now, when you turn the crank counterclockwise to loosen the bolt, the rope jams the piston.

For tightening, same trick. But turn the crank counterclockwise 90 degrees from TDC so the tightening action (clockwise) jams the rope.

Personally, I find the front pulley tool works great.
