Has anyone had any experience with resolving hard steering problems with a 89 240?
I did some brake service last night and decided to investigate why my steering is so hard. So, while the car was up on the lift I moved the steering wheel left and right and felt what I felt on the road: While turning the wheel there seems to be "hard spots", points of resistance.
I felt the same thing on the lift. So I went even further and removed the tie rod ends and rotated each free wheel by hand, I found no resistance.
With the tie rod ends off the steering STILL felt hard. So I went even further and looked inside each boot, no leakage, just mild grease.
Then I removed the end cap off of the steering gear. There was plenty of grease and some steering fluid in the cap, looked alright to me.
While my helper was turning the wheel, there seemed to be a warpage of the stud that enters the steering gear. Maybe this is contacting something inside and causing resistance.
Anyone have any comments and suggestions?
