Re-installing alternator-- HOW????? 200 1985

OK, so I took out my faulty alternator and am trying to replace it with a new one. I've already nearly broke a nuckle and ripped my fingernail in half trying to get the damn thing back on. What am I doing wrong? I tried putting the lower bolt on first, then I can't get the V belts on. Tried putting the V belts on first, then can't get the damn lower mounting bolt on!!! Any suggestions at this point would be greatly appreciated!
