I own a 1984 240 Diesel with about 87,000 miles. Soon I am going to have to replace the radiator; the car still has the original one. I used to own a gas powered 240; the temperature gauge on that car rarely, if ever, moved above the "half-way" mark. The diesel, which I have owned for about 4 years now, always runs a little hotter; the needle always sits between the half-way mark and the red-range, and under stress (which for the diesel means attempting acceleration) sometimes moves close to the red zone. I understand that the diesels run a lot hotter than the gas powered 240s, but i'm worried about the damaging effects of the heat. Despite the fact that the car is terribly under-powered, I really like it, and it's in excellent mechanical and physical shape, so I plan to keep it for a long time. My question, finally, is: have any of you other diesel owners or former owners attempted to modify the cooling system of these cars, either by putting a larger radiator in the car, or somehow increasing the effectiveness of the factory system? I'm not looking to spend tons of money, but with a diesel, I'm used to high repair costs. Any advice (besides swapping the engine...) would be greatly appreciated.
