HARD SHIFT ON 940 1st to 2nd gear 900 1993

I own a volvo 940, 1993 model with 170,000 miles. The car is mint condition. However, I've noticed a pretty hard shift from 1st to 2nd gear. Other than all other gears shift smoothly. It's hit or miss with this shift from 1st to 2nd, sometimes smooth, other times not. Downshift doesn't seem to be a problem from 2nd to 1st. Any ideas about what might be wrong?
