volt gauge.. .How To??? 200 1987

I recently bought a large tach/small clock combo for my 240 DL. I've seen some of the posts and i think i have a fairly good idea of how to do it. I would like to fill the other open accessory slot, so i placed a bid on a voltmeter gauge. First of all, what does that gauge tell me? second, what is involved it installing such a gauge. Is it pre-wired, fairly easy, or as time consuming as installing the oil pressure gauge?
