Floods when restarted hot. Too rich 200 1988

HELP. We have a 1988 240GL. It has had the engine replaced. The motor is older than the car, but I do not know the year of the motor. I do know I am dealing with an LH 2.2 fuel system. It does not have a code reader unit.

This car runs good with great power except it has issues which makes it junk yard ready. I own 4 Volvo's and pride my ability to troubleshoot. However, I am almost stuck. The engine runs too rich. The milage is around 15 MPG. It starts and fires good cold. But if you start it hot, it is running very very rich and if you touch the pedal it dies. I assume touching the pedal adds more fuel to an overfuel condition. If we let it run for 30 seconds, it will clean out on its own and rev up to 2500 rpm and then settle down to an even 1100 rpm idle. The idle is always high. We have replaced the air mass meter with a new one. It helped the power issues, but the engine is still too rich and the adjustment screw for this model AMM does not seem to make any difference, but we are not really at an idle any how are we? I replaced the O2 sensor with a generic. No help. I removed the throttle body and cleaned the scum off. No change. The idle microswitch clics and I assume it is functioning. I have not checked anything with a voltmeter etc.

I have not changed the temperature sending unit. I have one on order. I am thinking it might not be sending the right signal to the fuel processor even though the temperature guage operates ok. The fast idle has not been addressed yet. I thought it was the throttle body adjustments and cleanings and was very disapointed when the high idle was still there. I have not checked the injectors for air leaks. That might,and I mean might, explain the high idle.

I thought maybe the fuel pressure was way too high. I have no way to check the pressure yet. I did switch the pressure regulator with one of our newer 240's and it made no difference. I did not check to see if the fuel return line is restricted.

I am wondering if the older engine had diferent injectors and that explains the rich running? The engine may have been from an earlier LH system and that explains all the extra fuel?

My family wants me to dump the car. That means I will wake up nights wondering and go to my grave knowing I gave up. I appreciate any help you give me. HELP HELP HELP. It is not easy for me to ask...a guy thing I guess.
