Silencing exhaust system-related vibrations at idle for 740's. 740-760 87

ICQ>

When we bought a '93 940, I was made aware of how much more our '87 740, B230F, AW70 with 118k vibrated at idle. Of course the 740 needed several tuneup related items which smoothed things out somewhat, but what really did the trick was new motor and trannie mounts, and a trannie-to-exhaust pipe bracket that Volvo starting putting on the 940's in 1992.

Volvo tech. bulletin number 709 states "Idling vibrations on 740/940 series vehicles may be alleviated by installing a bracket between the rear of the gearbox and the exhaust pipe (for B230F, B230FT)."

For around $70, you can get from the Volvo parts department these parts:

#3507501-9 - Tail support for transmission

#6842241-9 - Bracket (from trans. to exhaust)

#9135511-1 -Clamp for B230F OR

#1346590-1 -Clamp for B230FT

#946472-8 -4 screws for tail support (longer than what are now there)

#946173-2 -1screw for exhaust clamp

The parts department I went to didn't have the clamp, so I'll make my own. However, the tail support and bracket pieces (with the 4 longer screws) make this job a piece of cake.

If the trannie mount on your 740 needs replacing (does your shifter knob shake?), put this assembly on at the same time (or make one yourself). It greatly reduces vibrating exhaust problems.
