I repair the outside door handles all the time. Commonly, what happens is the rivet breaks at the pivot, or the pin that actuates the lever fails.
Remove the door handle. Grind off the end of the rivets on the inside of the door handle. Swing the chrome part up to grind the backside of the pin off. Pull the pin out, and remove the chrome part.
Using a 5mm tap, thread those three holes. Put the two pieces together and run the proper lengths bolts in the pivots, fasten 5mm nylock locknuts to the bolts. Don't forget to leave just enough slack, so the pivot mooves freely. With the grinder, grind off any extra bolt length. In the actuator hole, screw in a bolt of proper length, tightly. I have never had a failure of that repair.
The problem is door slammers. Once the door is out of adjustment, the door handle works harder to do it's job. Driving the car with the door ajar is another no no. The doors are a part of the structural integrity of the car, and the left rear door is the first to indicate a twisted Volvo.
