Re: dumb strut question 240-260 84

ICQ>

Not really a dumb question!

Non Turbo Shocks had a heavy washer/spacer/seat in the bottom of the strut housing and would prevent the shock from ratteling in the tube. The Turbo Gas Shocks had a wide end at the bottom and would not require the washer.

With the Turbo's getting older and shocks replaced more and more and with non-volvo parts, it's difficult to keep track of who put what in.

You would have to compare the bottom of the old shock with the new one and see if there would be a need for a spacer and look in the tube to see if there is one. The spacer rests on a heavy lockring.(may have to turn it upside down and take lower balljoint off to be sure.

Knock in steering that you mention can be from inner rack&pinion sockets inside the rackboots (not ajustable, maybe greasable other wise replace).

On my 83 Turbo and 88 240 i noticed that the rack was somewhat loose on the crossmember after a couple of years on Pennsylvania's largest collection of potholes (=roads)...check them mountings!

hope this helps

jv
