Drive Belts 200 1988

Hello all. Im in the process of replacing my coolant pump and timing belt and im to the part where the belts need to come off. Im using the Bentley service manual and it says release tension as much as possible then slide the belts over the pulleys...but it fails to mention how i get the tension off of the belts! Any help at all would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!
