Tach meter "moody" 700 86 Gle

My tachometer most of the time doesn't work but the car runs excellent.Sometimes, it just decides to work !!!! Go figure..The car runs fine either way.Is this a sensor problem or do I need a new tachometer.How hard is it to replace ??? Thanks for your time..
