Brake lights come on too late...and water pump fiasco 200 89,80

The brake lights in my 89 wagon aren't coming on until i mash down pretty good on the pedal. i located the switch (after mistakenly messing with the cruise control switch first), and can feel the nut that adjusts it, but i can't see how to adjust it because the damn cruise control plate is in the way. does anyone know whether can i just take the wires out of the switch and back it out until i get it to come on with a light tap of the pedal, or is it more complex? i can't see the thing to really get an accurate idea of what's going on.

the water pump fiasco is like this: i put a new one on because i was replacing the seals and thought it was a good time. either i got a really crappy one, or i put the belt on too tight (i think its the latter) and it is making a noise like its going to fall apart. i put it on with the blue glue, so i'm gonna have fun putting the old one back on. i guess i'm out 30 bucks. btw is that cheap for the part (=cheap part) or about right? maybe it was due to a crappy one? i don't know.
