frightening noise 700 1992

I've heard a frightening noise from my '92 740 wagon: at 70mph suddenly I'll hear a very loud noise from the right rear of the car. It sounds like I've driven up next to a Harley with open pipes. The sound lasts for about 3 to 5 seconds. This has happened three times in the past two months. I've checked: the tires for tread seperation, the wheels for loose lug nuts, and the muffler for looseness. I can't find anything obivious. And I wasn't driving on the "rumble strip". Loud unexplained noises frighten me as I equate them with large expendatures of money. Does anyone have any experience with this type of noise problem?
