Again, I'm a housewife with little if no mechanical experience who poses this question: I never liked the Volvo brake pads on my 740 1990 wagon because they made so much "dust" on my hubcaps that I decided to use Becker(?) pads which are nice and clean. Very happy with them. No problems. Then my heroic car eventually made this horrific "squealing-like-a-Banshee" noise. My mechanic said I needed new pads - okay that didn't help; then I needed newer pads as they were warranteed for life so why not? - okay, that didn't work; well, maybe they had dust on between the pad and shoe - okay, that wasn't it either; well, maybe the rotors needed to be cut - well, maybe you need new rotors. The guy is really a terribly nice guy but I don't think he knows what he's talking about when it comes to Volvos. This is my second Volvo wagon so you can see I love them. First wagon was totally maintained by the Volvo dealership who performed beautifully but they were too expensive and I thought I was a little wiser with my second Volvo (maybe I wasn't!) My question is: shouldn't a mechanic have noticed that I needed to either have the rotors shaved or that I needed new ones when he took the wheels off? And, any ideas as to what it could really be? I've spent a few hundred on this one!!! And the kids have school supplies to be bought, soccer dues to pay, organizations to belong to, and hubby has a birthday coming up so money is an issue at this point. I tried so hard to support the local business man . . . .
Thank you.
