Can carbon pass through the turbo into the coolant? 700 1988

I've had this strange problem lately with my 88 740T.

I have a black buildup in the coolant tank, and it's not oil. I am thinking that it may be carbon from the turbo, but I'm not sure.

The turbo runs strong, and I have no problems with the way the car runs.. I am just concerned that it may be time for a rebuild of the turbo (or replacement unit) at 178,000 miles.

Any suggestions?

Ted
