The clutch in my '86 245 is acting weird. When I upshift above 3500rpm, it "thunks" into gear and this can be felt through the drivetrain. I just had the clutch replaced at the end of August because the T/O bearing was toast (180,000 mi!) but it did this before as well. Not sure if it's because the flywheel weighs a hefty 22 lbs., or if my motor/tranny mounts are in need of replacement.
The 3.31:1 rear end doesn't help...have to wind it out to 4500rpm when I'm merging onto the freeway to avoid becoming instant road kill. Can't really keep it in O/D unless I'm doing over 70, otherwise it bogs down on the slightest incline. Hey, I'm not complaining here, but let's face it -- most of the power (torque) is at >3K rpm, which works out to about 80mph in OD!
Can't beat the mileage, though. 27.3mpg on my last tank. Not bad at all for a tank like the 245. ;-)
