Overdrive default and Power steering 900 1993

I have 2 questions:

1. On the auto transmission, is it possible to modify it such that the default operation is such that the car starts up NOT in 4 speed mode, rather in 3 speed mode? By that, I mean, could one reverse the polarity on the solenoid such that it is dis engaged when you first turn on the key?

2. Has anyone ever wired a switch to turn off the power steering. I find that when I'm cruising at 110 (thats kph), the steering feels way too sloppy and I think I would rather not have power assisted steering. Or maybe a variable arrangement whereby I could "dial it in" to suit?
