Temperature Fluctuation 200 1987

I just bought a 1987 244 from a friend who has maintained it well. He needed the money and I got a steal. However, on my first day driving it to work (45 miles) the temperature guage was up then down then up again. This went on while my heart rate was fluctuating as well. I drove home and figured that I would take the fairly new radiator out of my 1984 (which NEVER has given me one lick of problem in 4-1/2 years!!). I also swapped out the thermostat to get me on the road to work.

I didn't get several blocks up the street and it happened again. A Volvo mechanic friend told me to look at the wire going to the temperature sensor under the intake manifold. I did look a little fried and I cut back in the harness, did a professional splice job and a new end and then re-attached it. I drove it last night and again, the guage was all over the place.

This morning I got init to test it again. The guage climbed 1/4 inch up the scale, went to total zero, and never moved again. What in the world is going on.

I know that I am getting good circulation, my heat is good in the car. About the only other thing that I can think of is the temperature guage itself.

Any advice? Thanks!
