Front Strut Question (dumb) 700 1985

Two weeks ago replaced struts in 85 740 GLE. The directions on strut said to remove all pieces in tube. I did so. Afterwards I read that the bottom spacer should be left in. Whoops. Already sh*t canned it. I didn't have a problem until yesterday whem I replaced ball joint. Now there is a definite clunk in front when I hit a sharp disturbance in road. Even at low (2-3 miles an hour)speed. Double checked all bolts, they're okay. When I reach up and grap spring I can twist it, but I seems to be under compression. Other side spring is very tight, (cause I did the struts at different times and left in spacer at bottom) Is there something else to look at? Or is it the obvious? Draler said that this piece is not available as a part. Help, the clunk is killing me.
