Fuel pump noise? 700 1990

Hi,

I am having a no-start problem with my 1990 740 wagon. Should I hear the fuel pump kick on when I turn the key to the "run" position, as I used to on my old 1980 240? I am not hearing anything until I turn the key all the way to "start". I've checked the fuses in the console, and all seem to be ok.
