I have recently obtained a really very nice 93 245 Classic, number 276 of 1600. This is Volvo number 16 for me, since that first 142S back in '69. Except for a bit of wear on the driver's seat, it looks and runs quite well for 165,000 miles. One complaint I have had with later 240s is the rather leisurely performance. I have given the car a thorough going-over, and all is spot-on throughout, except for the ignition timing. The usual specs for timing call for a setting of 12+/-2 degress BTDC at idle, and I have found that taking that figure to its limit at 14 degees seems to increase the responsiveness significantly. This 240 has the timing set at 8 degrees, and there is no way that I have found to adjust it. the standard method of rotating the distributor does not affect a change, even after removing the moulded block under the clamp bolt.
Now, after all of this rather long-winded dissertation, my question is simply this: does anyone have a method for changing the timing setting?
