I bought my second 240 last spring knowing I'd have a little work ahead of me to get it up to snuff. A good cleaning, front end alignment, tires, motor and transmission mounts, tune up parts, water pump, splash pan and other maintenance all when towards making a cheap car a good car. My only real quandry has been curing the rough idle. I cleaned the throttle body, cleaned and check the idle control motor, replaced the flame trap and hoses, checked vacuum hoses but still no smooth idle. Then after checking the archives for similar trouble I found the tip about checking for leaks in the intake gasket. Being just a little high stimulus and impulsive I sprayed some carb cleaner around the intake manifold when the engine was running. Sure enough, the speed changed. The carb cleaner was being drawn into the engine past a leaky gasket. $3.72 for a new gasket,45 minutes to replacement time (next time I'll wait until the engine is cool)and the car is idling very smoothly. I still have to work out an adjustment with the base idle setting and the throttle position switch but things are looking up thanks to all those people who've left a trial for us to follow.
