More fun news. While driving back from a weekend in San Antonio, I was passing through Austin when traffic got REAL heavy, REAL quick. The four cars in front of me locked up their brakes, and I did the same... having to choose between hitting the jersey barrier on my left, the cars streaming by still at full speed on my right, or the guy in front of me. I chose the third option. Fortunately, he was not injured and his vehicle was not damaged at all beyond a few paint smudges on his rear bumper. I also was unharmed, but Gustaf has a bit of a bruise on his drivers side front corner. The bumper gave way as it was supposed to and appears to have rebounded. The air dam is intact, and so is the hood. The headlight is shattered and so is the turn signal assembly, and the surrounding metal (including a bit of the fender) is crushed in. I'm sure I could have the damage repaired with little trouble, but I had always been kicking around in the back of my mind what my 780 would look like with a newer front end.
Here's what I'm considering... I'd kicked around the idea of just swapping the bumper or front spoiler, but since the damage is not in that area, that's a moot point right now. So, we're talking the whole shebang... presumably off a newer car that has been wrecked. Fenders, bumper, spoiler, hood, headlights, grille, and turn signals, the whole nine yards. Now, the latest cars (S60, S40, S80, '01 & '02 S70) would probably look a bit TOO new on my '91 780, but how about the older S70s? Are the dimensions even close? Choice number two would be an 850 front end, but I don't know if there's a difference between model years and if (presumably so) earlier 850s would be easier to swap on than later 850s. Option number 3 is an S90/960 front end. Least preferable, but I still think it'd look cool.
Here's what I'm asking- has anyone done these or done any research on feasibility? Any input would be appreciated. Also, if anyone knows of a good Volvo boneyard in central Texas, I'm all ears!
Thanks,
