SRS Light On after removing airbag. why? 900 1993

Hey folks, I removed the airbag on my '93 945 the other day, b/c I had to get the steering wheel off, and when i put it back in, and turned the car on, the SRS light came on, and stays on. I simply unplugged it, and then plugged it back in a short while later. Why did this happen and what do I have to do get the light to go off? Also, should I have it checked out by the dealer to ensure that it is activated and working properly? Thanks for your input.
