Last week on a trip my clutch pedal went to the floor with the accompanying 'crunch' noise. I crawled underneath expecting to see that the ball end was dangling free -- it was tight. I went up to the pedal, pulled the pin and the cylinder to free the yoke at the upper end from the pedal -- still tight. I couldn't pull the supposedly broken cable out of the sheath.
What had happened was the large plastic flange at the bellhousing end of the cable which pushes against the 'backstop' of the bellhousing tube had sheared off. As a consequence, the sheath and cable just pulled through that bellhousing tube.
This cable was a Beck-Arnley part which I installed in August 2000. One year and approx. 10,000 miles off a B-A part. Not encouraging...
