Just bought a 1983 242 Turbo the other night, and I haven't been able to wipe the smile off my face since. Of course everyone else I know is calling to see what medication I'm on, but I'm happy. Smoke free, intercooler, worn interior, no rust, a little body damage, 190k miles, and it smells like a wet rat, but when it gets going . . .ZOOM!
Anyway, this being my first turbo, and somewhat of a project, I need some advice on what to tackle in what order. I'll list the major stuff that I'm pondering and see what you guys think.
-Engine is idling really high when it's cold,it also is hesitant to start at first, but when it warms up, it's fine. Is this indicative of anything particular, or a whole mess of things?
-Automatic transmission is not going into overdrive. I'm guessing it is the relay, but is there a test I can do to be sure?
-The suspension is really tired, what is the consensus on upgrades? I've read that the 79 242 GT had the best setup, but what should I pirate off one of these if I find one (seems like sway bars and springs but I'm not sure)?
-What kind of run down should I give it to keep it 'healthy'? I was planning on changing all the fluids next week, maybe the spark plugs, but was hoping that would get me by until the spring. I don't have any records and the car has sat around since May. Anything else to look out for?
The car set me back $1000, and I smoked my wife on the way home in her 850. She thinks I'm going a little over the edge, but I see the potential. I'll post a picture this week! By the way, am I crazy (I really just need to give the wife peace of mind that I'm not; however, I've been deemed unreliable)?
Thanks,
Mark
