Overdrive Troubles: Relay? 700 1990

Hello All-

1990 745T w/AW71, 145K miles. Car almost refuses to stay in overdrive. Traveling down the road at any speed, the car will downshift out of overdrive with the slightest throttle pressure. Sometimes, the car will downshift on its own when cruising, applying no extra throttle pressure. All other shifts are very smooth. Kickdown cable is new and correctly adjusted. Mobil 1 ATF is fresh. The OD relay works immediately regarding turning shift indicator light on and off (I can also hear the relay click). Car will immediately go of out of OD when the button is pressed (light on) but is very reluctant to return to OD when again pressing the button (light off). I did, some three years ago, reflow the solder on the relay. This solved the relay 'operating' on its own(shift indicator light going on and off, slow response to pressing the button, etc.). Reflowing the solder again has not helped. Removal of the relay removes overdrive, so it seems essential to the proper operation of the tranny: this is why I suspect it as the cause, though I am not sure.

Any ideas?

Thanks.

P.S. The relay, after five minutes of driving, is incredibly hot, much to hot to touch the coil, for instance.
