I am new to volvos and have been reading from the arcives about my 740 GLE.
After learning about the timing belt and oil pump pully bolt situations, I wanted to have a look my own. What I found scared me. After removing the timing cover I found ball bearings in the bottom of the cover. Futher examanation reveled that my balance shaft belt tensioner and possably lower b.s. pully had locked up sometime in the last 26000 miles. I have had this car since August and haven't noticed any strange noises, so I'm sure it happened before I owned the car. The timing belt seemed to be in good shape. Maintance records show that both belts were replaced at 99000 miles. I cut the b.s. belt off, collected the pieces and put the cover back on. I have put another 1000 miles on since this discovery and plan to replace the timing belt and oil pump pully bolt soon. What are your oppions on leaving the b.s. belt off. The car runs good, except for not wanting to idel after start up in warm weather. Maybe the b.s. are a contributing factor to this problem?
