Oil sucker 900 1992

Da wife's '92 965 shows no drips or leaks, but a verrry black tailpipe, and is using prodigious amounts of oil. Still gets around 26 MPG (about 70 miles/day interstate, and 8-10 street)and has great acceleration. Any ideas about where to start with the diagnoses, or is this a "Sorry, Babe, I just shot and buried your car " situation? What kinda bucks are we talking about for a rebuild if necessary? She just bought the car 6 months ago, and loves it. Maybe she should have gotten fingernail parings or hair samples from the salesman to make a little voodoo doll to ride under the hood? Wish I'd heard of the Brickboard before she bought Moby Brick...
