Just acquired an 82 242 Turbo (with 75k original miles). This is the first AW71 I've ever dealt with (M46/45/51 dude).
Shifter linkage is loose and sloppy (easy fix after seeing a lot of these things in 700s up on the hoist). That's the gimme issue.
In reverse, the thing clicks -- click-click-click-click-click-click. It seems like it makes less clicking noise if you hold the shifter in one place (where you think most of R is on the dial, since it seems to vary between R and N). Noise also translates into a vibration in the shifter; mild vibration.
After sitting at a dead stop for 20 or more seconds and then flooring the car (turbo needs work -- it's a dog right now), there is a series of audible clunks that come from within the tranny tunnel, in the neighborhood of where the center support bearing is. The bearing looks ok, but I haven't spent much time under the car so can't write that off. Usually the clunks happen from dead stop until you ease off the gas -- sometimes 5 or 6 clunks. If you start off mellow, no clunks. Whaddya think, U-joint? Half shaft out of balance? Bad center support bearing? Or are all these things some problem with the inner workings of an AW71?
Tranny was light on fluid and I filled it, will go bring it up to temp and make sure the thing is topped off properly. But no change in click or clunk after the fluid addition. Shifts fine otherwise, OD works nicely.
Think I'll go drive my M46.
