Help re-installing M40 tranny in 67 122 120-130 1967

Hi,

I'm having troubles reinstalling the transmission (M40) back into the '67 122 from whence it came. The problem is that the transmission (with bellhousing attached) does not clear the transmission tunnel.

When removing the transmission, I experienced the same problem - the transmission tunnel was in the way of a straight shot for the removal as well. Since the clutch was shot anyhow, I was able to persuade the tranny out by bending a few fingers on the clutch cover. Obviously I don't want to do that now, and mess up the new one.

The basic problem seems to be that the rear of the engine is too high. Currently, I've got the rear of the car elevated higher than the front, which seems to be the right direction, but I'm still hitting. Is loosening the motor mounts and prying the rear of the engine down the right answer?

The Haynes book suggests removing and installing the tranny with the bellhousing intact. Should I install the bellhousing separately, and then try to secure the tranny on the bellhousing with the 4 allen head bolts after the bellhousing is in place (assuming this will go by itself) ?

Any other ideas?

Best Regards,

Shawn
