automatic tranny? Should I buy a 1984 240 with an automatic tranny?

I have an older Volvo 144, and I am now looking at a 1984 240 (244) with about 125000 miles on it, my question is under normal wear and tear, along with scheduled services done, how many miles are the auto trannys good for? I am a Manual lover myself but this car is just simply priced right, it also has Overdrive, what kind of MPG could one get with one of these Bricks?
