No start, 745, K jet FYI 700 1986

I've re-acquired my old 740 wagon. The guy I sold it to trashes cars. In the space of 4 months he has spilled paint in the car, busted off an electric door mirror, smashed the glass in the tailgate, and put dents in the roof, door and front wing. It must have decided it had enough and refused to start. He rang and said I could have it if I towed it from in front of his house.

Apparently he had the AA out to it who managed to break the connector out of the bottom of the distributor, but diagnosed a faulty injection pump. The pump always was noisy, and the fuel pressure was low so I put on a shiny new Bosch pump. Would it run, would it hell. I then decided I didn't like the busted distributor. After that it would fire for 3 or 4 seconds and die. I messed about with it for ages, checked all the connection, re-soldered the relays, all the usual stuff. I knew the pre-pump worked because I checked it delivered fuel when I replaced the main pump. In the end, because I was running out of ideas I took the sender unit/pre-pump assembly out of the tank. Turned out the little hose connecting the pre-pump to the steel pipe had a small split in it. As far as I can see the pre pump incorporates a non return valve. The hole stopped the main pump from priming properly. Bit of new hose and it runs great!

Regards

Pete
