burning smell and dead battery 90 240 200 1990

Good evening all,

Car died three days ago, dead battery. Replaced the battery, drove it home 20 miles. Drove it to work, 25 miles, drove it back, died three miles from home. Charged the new battery for three hours, went back out, put battery back in, drove it home. Acceleration very soft, as if charging system not working well. Got home, popped the hood, and noticed a strong burning smell, as if the alternator was charging but the charge was going nowhere. Anyone know if this car has some sort of external charging regulator, or if I should just get a good rebuild alternator and put it in?

Thanks,

Jack
