Can someone explain were extra weight should go for winter traction.

I've been searching this site for answers and it seems to be split 50/50 were some say that extra weight should be added behind drivers seat in the rear foot well. Others say the extra weight should be in the trunk as close to the rear wheels as possible. I've tried both and I'm not sure which is better. I have two 70 pound bags of sand. When I first got them I bound them together with zip ties and placed them in the trunk right over the rear wheels. I notice that the rear sagged a little but I didn't have problems. I moved the bags to the rear footwells and the back doesn't sag, in fact is does seem to be more balanced this way but I don't know why. Anyone care to tell me what they do and why? thanks guys
Michael
