Can someone explain were extra weight should go for winter traction.

I second GT6. The middle of the car spreads the weight forward as well as back. The rear axle location is good for traction, but doesn't upset the fore and aft weight balance too much. The little bit that's disturbed in single-occupant driving (same weight in the passenger compartment) shouldn't affect the steering ability as it can begin to when you load up against the rear bumper. Also, any braking difference caused by slightly offset weight is accomodated by the ABS system anyway. In other words, hardly concerning. One hundred and forty pounds is a lot of weight. You should have few problems.

The BEST winter handling upgrade, however, is a good set of tires. They (obviously) make the most profound impact on winter driving.
