OK Gang ... I posted a query about this a few months ago and as I recall, I didn't get a response at that time ... so here we go again ......
Although I have gotten all the slack out of the steering gear of my trusty old 120S, it still has that feeling of slack on the centerline that is typical of recirculating ball steering systems, and having gotten spoiled driving newer cars with rack amd pinion steering ... the question has come to mind about converting the old girl to R&P. Has anyone else on the board had these thoughts and if so have you done any investigations about it and what are the solutions that you have come up with? Is there a newer model VOLVO Rack that might fit? I discussed this with a mechanic friend and he felt that it would/could throw the steering geometry out too badly to make it worth while. Personally I can't see his reasoning. I would think that as long as the rack to wheel tie rod ends are set to the same dimension as the length of the existing tie rods there should not be any problem as basically the rack would just, in theory, be replacing the tie rods, idler, pitman arm and steering box ... can anyone point out any flaws in my reasoning so far ?
OK other than the cries of "SACRILEGE" and "BURN THE HERETIC" is there any valid reason that this swap cannot or should not be performed ? Personally I think that it would be a GREAT improvement on the handling of the 122 ... maybe even a POWER rack Hmmmm Combined with my IPD sway bars and big tires ... Hmmmmmm to quote the little German guy on "Laugh in" "VERRRRRYYY INTERRRESSSSTING ....."
Looking forward to your comments (he says ducking behind a big solid object)
Just like the Energizer Bunny .... It just keeps going and going and going ...
