Counter hold tool 5284 200 1990

Had planned to do the front seals, t-belt, tensioner, and cam cover gasket on my dad's 90 245 wagon today. After reading the tips of those who have gone before me on this project, I bought tool #5284 from my local dealer. I got down to the point where I was going to use the tool to loosen the front pulley bolt only to discover that the hole at the top of the tool i about 1/4 inch too short of where it should be and will not allow the tool to slide over the tensioner stud and also seat properly in the crank pulley. In the spirit of measure twice and drill once, I thought I would see if any one else has had this experience with 5284 that needs a little tweaking, or am I missing something here. Also, accompanying 5284 in its box was an approximately 3 inch long device that consists of a pin (about the diameter of a 6d nail) riveted to a "C" shaped piece of mild steel. I have no materials for reference on how this piece should be (if at all) deployed with 5284.

Thanks in advance for your help,

JK
