a note about sagging sunroofs 700 1985

Brickers:

A while back there were a number of posts about sunroof sag on this board. Having pulled mine previously I offered some suggestions to the various brickers.

However, recently I noticed that despite my adjusments my sunroof is continuing to sag, so I again went in for a close examination. It seems there is a problem with these sunroofs that my earlier advice failed to account for. Below are my findings:

The adjustment screws on my sunroof were maxed, and the sunroof was still low. Looking closely I noticed that there was a discoloration on the end of the metal bar that the screw holds the sunroof onto. These two levers, one on either side of the sunroof running parellel to the car's direction, also maintain the sitting height of the sunroof. When I looked really close I noticed that the discoloration was, in fact, a spot that was supposed to connect the rear and front ends of this rod. Both support/adjustment rods had snapped in half in the middle.

After looking at some other sunroofs in a junkyard (no easy task given the stacking/crushing method my yard uses), my final conclusion is that this is a design flaw. The two adjustment rods that manage sunroof height are weakest right in the middle, where they slim to about a 1/2"x 1/3" connection. Pressure and time can weaken the metal, and the pressure of using the roof in the vent position (from the springloaded mounts for the sunroof ceiling to the force applied by highway speed winds) can cause the rods to snap.

So, both my rods are snapped, and it seems there is no method short of replacing the sunroof (or getting ahpld of replacement rods... not sure if I can get them out yet) that will repair the situation. Gluing/epoxy/fixes are useless because of the contsant force applied to the rods, and anything short of welding the pieces back together won't hold.

Conclusion:
If you notice your sunroof is sagging constantly, and that you can't seem to get it to stay at the height you want, even WITH massive adjustment of the sitting screws, this is likely your problem. Open the roof in the vent position and use aq flashlight to take a closer look.

Just thought everyonbe might like the info.
