1990 240 DL Wagon engine heat fluctuations 200 1990

I just purchased a very nice & clean 240 DL wagon. Engine runs really nicely with no issues other than an engine heat gauge that seems to swing wildly without any seeming relationship to ambient temperature and speed. The indicator goes as high as about 10:00 on the gauge. I've yet to have the car tuned yet but I'd like to hear if anyone has seen similar things with other 240s.
