Tailgate lifts removal, how? 200 1987

Trying to replace one of my tailgate lifts. ('87 240 dl wagon) How do you take the lift out of the ball joint at the end? The lift rod goes into the brass cylinder just before the ball joint but can't remove old one from it. Any ideas?
