Can't get driveshaft halves reassembled! 700

I separated the driveshaft halves on an 89 Volvo 740 sedan ---
Now I can't get them re-fitted together.

They were difficult to muscle apart & now I see why....
There is a damn strong seal in a cap mounted on the female half with that is preventing me from forcing the splined-shaft into it's proper place.

I see a 'key' spline on one half + a matching wide groove inside the other half to prevent missalignment... but the seal is so small & tight that I cannot get the halves joined!

What's the trick to getting them re-assembled?
