Classic OD problems 200 1983

The overdrive in my 83 242Ti/auto isn't working. I checked the relay in the dash and it is clicking like it should. Then I went to check the solenoid on the transmission. I was going to check it too, but couldn't see where the harness unplugged from the shifter and couldn't get my hands up there to feel around either. I know that there are two bolts holding it in, a wire clip, and then it unplugs from the top. Although I didn't remove it, I noticed that the boot covering the top of the unit is severely cracked and the wires are frayed at the clip. Is it even worth checking this thing out or from physical inspection can I conclude that it's gone? Can I rebuild it or should I buy a new one?

I checked the archives and read of people spending anywhere between $90 and $200 on this solenoid. Naturally, if I don't have to spend $200 I don't want to since I planned to replace the struts and shocks next month. Who is the best outlet for a new solenoid?

Thanks,
Mark
