Prospective 245T Purchase--question 200

Hi all,
I am a newbie here and apologize if this has been asked a lot...

I have been offered an '83 245 Turbo with ~150k miles, manual tranny, religiously maintained but not used much during the past couple of years, minimal rust (some surface in the rear wheel arch and on hatch). Suspension is tired but it allegedly runs well and the driveline is in good shape. It does use some oil but doesn't smoke. The wastegate "doesn't have a good fit" and needs to be fixed. Gray exterior and black leather interior in good shape, etc.

Price is $500. Seller is a college friend of my fiance and is generally to be trusted. He is living abroad, doesn't need the car and doesn't want to do the fixes, hence the low price just to get rid of it.

I am a fairly experienced shadetree wrench as I do all my own work on my '88 BMW 325is (223k) and my '75 BMW 2002 (who knows how many miles). I can use a Bentley book, I understand Bosch injection and I'm not afraid to take stuff apart. Turbos are new, though.

Question is, is this a good deal for somebody who is able to do his own mechanical work? If the turbo is cooked are replacements findable? I can use a wagon and have always wanted a 240 turbo...so I'm very tempted by this offer.

Thanks for any input you can provide...I appreciate the BW.
