Turbo Rod Knock/Replace? 700 1986

I'm looking for opinions on the best course of action for a 1986 745 turbo that has a rod knock. Engine was run low on oil (not by me), runs but has a mild rod knock. I've learned from this forum that connecting rod failure on turbo models is not uncommon, therefore the question arises: If I repair the engine, should I, as a matter of course, replace the connecting rods? This is otherwise a nice car being given to me gratis. Or, can I simply put in a crank kit, cross my fingers, and drive off into the sunset? The reason for the low oil, by the way, was due to a failed front seal. No indications of any other problems prior to this.
