Turbo Rod Knock/Replace? 700 1986

The only time the early B230FT's run into conn rod problems is with high boost and detonation. Detonation can occur because of clogged fuel injectors, as in they are dirty and need a cleaning and balancing, or high boost without proper fuel/air mixture. The later model B230FT's are much better. The newer conn rods are supposed to be thicker in certain areas.

For a knock problem, try a new oil pump, as they are considered wear items.

Another source of engine self destruction is the wastegare control hose. It runs from the compressor housing to the wastegate diaphragm and if it comes loose, it can kill an engine. The engine's boost is essentially uncontrolled and if the overpressure switch has failed, the engine will go. Make sure the hose is OK. The hose broke on mine and the boost was uncontrolled. Since the overpressure switch worked properly, the engine would cut out. I replaced the hose and eventually put in a G-valve, and all is fine.
