I've had my '81 4spd/OD for four years now...she's quite a gal. In her years she's developed a few quirks that I had some questions about.
To give some history, we drive home from school a few times a year ~500 miles. At first, after a few hundred miles on the highway a subtle clicking sound came from the overdrive. It used to only show up above 75mph and it would go away if we slowed, downshifted and then resumed highway speed in OD. It's progressed so that it shows up after 10 or so miles at 65, and reengaging OD doesn't alleviate it.
There is another OD quirk - not sure if it's related, but she won't always engage OD unless she's been running for quite some time. She also is quite stubborn when shifting into reverse and first at times, regardless of temperature. Are these tranny fluid related, or something deeper in the system? Any input is welcome...
