Hall Sensor shorting out. 87, 740 gle

I have gone through 2 distributors in a short time. The hall sensor has blown on both of them. I replaced the plug on the first one. When the car is running it misses accassionally and would occassionally die, but mostly run, idle, warm up just fine. I had a new Voltage Regulator installed in December. Could this be the culprit? Should I look for a short by tracing the 3 distributor wires back to the ignition? Could I install an inline fuse to avoid future hall sensor damage? I hope someone has input other than "better replace the whole wiring harness".
Thanks
N.
